The Estonian Rosette Workshop

This workshop is for knitters who want to expand their lace technique. We will work on an assortment of Estonian lace motifs, which we will swatch together. This series of swatches will allow the knitter to try the following techniques, all of which are optional and customizable! The knitter's choice!
  • Five types of decrease
  • Three types of increases
  • Inserting beads in lace knitting using a crochet hook
  • Two different lace "texture" stitches
  • The perfect nupp
  • Improving chart reading skills
  • Knitting Eastern crossed-uncrossed to speed-up your lace
Although the workshop is not project based, participants will have the option of casting-on for one of two projects that both include many of the techniques we will work on. Participants should know how to knit and purl and have experience working from charts. Prior lace knitting experience will allow the participant to cover more ground with more advanced techniques. There will be something for every level of lace knitter at this workshop!

Materials
  • #12-14 crochet hook
  • Seed beads in size 6 or 8 (Czech or Japanese) in a color to compliment your yarn.
  • Lace, fingering or sport-weight yarn in a light or bright color. I suggest you use something with wool in it, but a blend is fine. Please do not plan to use anything textured, furry, heavier in gauge or dark in color! You can bring an assortment of different yarns, but there should be at least 100 yards of each color you bring. If you bring two lots of 100 yards, you will have enough for the first day of the workshop.
  • Knitting needles to suit the weight of your yarn. Bring one size smaller and one size bigger then you would usually use. You will need double pointed needles (sets of five are best) or very small diameter circular needles for circular work and also straight or circular needles (any diameter) for back and forth work.
  • A pen and paper for notes and a digital camera if you want to take pictures of various maneuvers.
  • Stitch markers (at least five if you choose to try one of the borders.)
A handout with a nice selection of charts and instructions will be provided. If you choose to work on one of the larger projects, materials will be available for purchase.
